Hello, welcome to my virtual office on the Web. My actual (nonvirtual?) office is in scenic Piscataway, NJ, a short distance from the Raritan river and Johnson park, a great place to bicycle. It’s even closer to the Rutgers golf course, as can be seen from the small collection of golf balls I have which have landed near my window (fortunately not through it). A Sun IPC (sparcxt16.rutgers.edu) configured as an color Xterminal with an Ultra 1 (baobab.rutgers.edu) as its host provides me with access to the net (that and a lot of coaxial cable). This gives me an excuse to come in early (and stay late).

Professionally, I received my Ph.D. from the Department of Physics at Rutgers University back in May 1996. My dissertation, Statistical theories of fragmentation and nuclear disassembly, is an expanded presentation of my scientific publications (the abstract and full text are available for the curious). I’m still working on many aspects of this research as a postdoc, but my principal aim now is to find a job (really, I’m not joking). A hypertext version of my resume (HTML/PS) with several links for Web-savvy employers is a work in progress (emphasis on progress). Check it out! I’m also teaching a class at Rutgers (Advanced General Physics) and working part-time as an assistant system administrator for our Suns, so I manage to keep myself busy (too busy). Somehow during all this I manage to learn new things. For example, check out my example Java Percolation Applet.

When I’m not doing physics and job-hunting I’m probably sleeping, although I try to read at least one book a week, and I occasionally catch a good movie either in the theatre or on videocassette. I also listen to a variety of contemporary music. The rest of my time is divided among a number of interests. A Power Macintosh provides me with a number of (infrequently played ;-)) games and Intuit’s Quicken, which keeps me on top of my finances. I also use it to emulate my old Atari 800 computer, and a number of classic video consoles. This allows me a respite from my formerly intense hobby, cartridge collecting, about which I have written a long essay as sort of an object lesson in behavior modification. ;-) My current intense hobby is collecting comic books, especially ones related to Daredevil, the Man without Fear.

On a more serious note, I started some web pages about two issues which I am concerned about. One is the laissez-faire attitude which is increasingly evident in the US about energy issues. I don’t have any simple solutions, but more awareness of the situation needs to be raised. The other is an extended essay about efforts that should be made to simplify your life. It started out as a parody of a particular type of book, but it has become more serious with each revision and addition. Don’t take it too seriously yet, though.
